DSC 0021 200x300 Enlighten Through TravelOn October 1st, the Women International – Chapter hosted a event at school. Daniel Paschall took professional head shots for students to use on their LinkedIn, Facebook, blogs, etc. Some of the money was donated to an MBA1 student’s charity, Enlighten through Travel.

Lydia Onimo, a first year MBA student at Tulane University and a former high school teacher, watched her students struggle to reconcile the dreams they have for their lives with the reality they growing up in . Many children face a heartbreaking epidemic of crime and poverty in and throughout the United States. Lydia received a grant to travel abroad when I was 18. The experience changed her life and inspired her to create a better future for myself. She wants to help grant the same opportunity to local students.

The organization’s goal is to enlighten our youth and inspire them to achieve more than what they believe is possible. Lydia believes this is one way to fight this epidemic of crime and poverty. Last year, she organized the opportunity for an educational tour of Spain and France for 11 of her 9th-12th grade students. The trip cost over $40,000.  Lydia and the students worked hard to acquire the funds within six months.  In June of 2013, the organization will travel to and are setting out again to raise funds necessary for the trip.  MBA Women International – Tulane Chapter was happy to contribute to the cause.

Collectively, we can greatly impact 11 children who dare to challenge themselves, envision a bigger world, and seek to discover their limitless potential.

The MBA Women International – Tulane Chapter is hosting a event later this fall to help students build stronger networks within the New Orleans community. More information can be found at www.tulanewomenmba.org.

It is a busy semester for everyone, but it is always great to give back to the community.

As always, happy to answer any questions at agarrick@tulane.edu

The Global MBA & Mexico City

Even when the prospect of getting an MBA was but a tiny seedling in the recesses of my mind, I knew that I needed an international experience to fully realize my goals. I considered my options within the United States, and in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, but I was concerned that those options would leave me too focused on just a single country. Then I stumbled upon what seemed to be the perfect compromise to satiate both my wanderlust [...]

Fiscal Cliff Now or Economic Armageddon Later

In light of the recent US “fiscal cliff” and “debt ceiling” discussions I would like to bring the bigger picture of “Economic Armageddon” into view. In the middle of October, Professor Deen Kemsley led a discussion with Freeman students on the longer term outlook of the world economy, and the consensus was that if the global crisis were to occur, it would be a category 3 economic hurricane. Of course after the storm, the sun would rise again; the communities [...]
